Another immigrant’s horror story that urged me to write
I grew up in a different world, when the east of our continent was hidden behind the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall. Some people migrated, but they migrated to do the jobs no one else wanted to do.
By now, I have been numbed by endless tales of horror from the immigration fronts. Boats full of people going down in the Mediterranean, thousands of refugees entering the EU from war-torn nations from the south, violent clashes along the US-Mexican border, gangs from Eastern Europe along the Spanish coast… For years now it has been raining stories from the immigrants themselves — like this story “A 10-year-old immigrant faces risks, doubts on the journey to reunite with his mother” from The Washington Post — and it is impossible to remain cold.
So it was only a matter of time before the hero of my novels, Radio Detective and Bizz Jockey Carl Pappas, would speak up with his personal view on immigration. And that’s exactly what I’m doing right now: writing Radio Detective number 7: “Blood Border” — an independent crime novel that centers around illegal immigration. It’s not going to change the world, but I’m using my voice.
